In the summer of 1942, 25 female pilots were
recruited to become members of the WAFS, with Nancy Love as
commander. Each of the women had more than 1,000 hours of flying
time. Originally assigned to fly single-engine light airplanes,
the women demonstrated that they could handle fast pursuit ships
as well as the four-engine bombers on the transcontinental ferry
flights
