Scarf Patterns

Helpful Hints
Because some of my patterns are much more difficult to make than others, I decided to rate each of them in the order of "difficulty to knit" ...ranging from Simple to Expert. These icons will appear on the "add to cart" page.
	A scarf with the simple icon should be ok for those of you who are beginners. This rating is described as follows: SIMPLE: knit, k2tog, psso, purl, slp, yf, yb, straight needles, circular needles.
	After you have knitted a few things, you should be able to tackle those scarves marked average. This rating is described as follows: AVERAGE: cable, twist, straight needles, cable needles.
	This icon denotes a scarf that will require multiple needles and you should be familiar with more advanced patterns. DIFFICULT: KB1, Simple and Average sts. used every other row ( time consuming), or utilizes double pointed needles.
	Scarves bearing the black cat icon fall into the range of Expert Knitter and should not be attempted by those of you new to knitting. EXPERT: Includes all of the above sts. plus working patterns on double pointed needles, or purling on double pointed needles.

Special SLP Instructions

When I first started knitting, I became very frustrated with the edges of my work, so I set about correcting this problem. For a nice rounded smooth edge I suggest that you add two stitches to your pattern. On every row SLP the first stitch as if to purl with yarn to the front and knit the last stitch. My patterns all come with the special SLP included. Where there is difficulty with the pattern I specifically state Use No Special SLP.

Cable Needles ?

I have found cable needles difficult to work with and suggest you try a # 7 double pointed needle.

Get the Most Out of Your Yarn

Almost all of my Caron hat and scarf patterns can be made with 2 skeins of yarn. My helpful hint to squeeze the most out of the yarn is to work the scarf with the first skein to familiarize yourself with the pattern. Then use the second skein to make your hat and determine the amount of yarn needed for your tassels ( I always leave the tassels up to your discretion). You are now free to knit the remainder of the scarf with your remaining yarn.

Caron Yarn

I use Caron yarn for most of my patterns because it has such a wonderfully soft feel to the finished product. If you have ever used it you will have noticed that it knits up smaller than other worsted wt yarns. For this reason I would recommend that you don't try to substitute different yarns. It dramatically changes the size and feel of the
item enough to be problematic.

ABOUT FLAT HAT

I discovered one evening while experimenting that vertical ribbing makes a hat go flat. So I played around a little bit and created the Striped Flat Hat. What a fun way to use up all those scraps and pieces of left-over yarn. Have a ball !!

Multi-Colored Yarn

After many days of trial and error I came up with several patterns that work specifically well with novelty and multicolor yarns. Remember, the fancier the yarn the simpler you need to keep the pattern. I have either reduced the price of these patterns or given two for the price of one, because of their simplicity. However, they are well worth having because they work!

How to Weave in Yarn at Joints and at the End of Hats.

1) On the inside hidden piece of work catch up the knit stitches as shown. I recommend about 6 sts for hats, at least 10 for other projects.

2) Place needle behind the knit st. as shown and pull through.

3) Catch up the knit sts. down the following side and pull through.
Do not pull tight ! Snip Yarn.

4) Voila !!!

My young nephew said he and his friends at boarding school spent
