Getting Started
It is a good idea to create a folder
to store all of the html pages you will create with this text editor.
All of the images, sound files, etc; should be saved in this same
location. I would recommend that you create an new folder under C:\ My
Documents called My Webs\. To create this file, go to your desktop and
double click on "My Computer", then double click on "C:" then double
click on "My Documents". Click on File, New, Folder and this will
create a new folder under My Documents. Name this new folder "My
Webs". Then under My Webs, you can create as many sub-folders as you
want. When you are saving web pages to this location
after you create them, always make the html file lower case with no
spaces. The first page you will create is the index.htm page. It does
not matter if this file is index.htm or index.html as either one will
work. The index.htm becomes your home page for this web. Always begin a
new web in Front Page 2003 by clicking on File>New> One page web site.
Never use the File>New>Blank Page for this purpose. Once you have
finished the index.htm or home page and saved it, you will more than
likely want to create additional pages. This is when you would click on
File>New>Blank Page. If you know what you want to call this new page,
you can save it immediately after it opens by clicking on the "save"
icon on the top tool bar. You will be prompted to give it a name and you
also have the opportunity to change the title of the page if you so
desire. The title is what appears at the top left of the Browsers
window. Once you have saved this page, the name will appear in the
Folder List.
Front Page by
default will create some yellow folders that display in the Folder List.
These folders will show up as _private, images, and other _vti folders.
The images folder is where you want to store all of the images that are
related to your web. The _private and _vti folders work in the
background to do many of the tasks related to your site. These folders
should not be deleted nor should you manually try to put anything in
them or alter them
If you are working
with a template to create your index.htm, you may want to add just the
content that you want to appear on all subsequent pages then click on
"file save as" and save it as "template.htm". This will place "template.htm"
in your folder list. Then you can resume with the index.htm untill it
is completed. Now when you get ready to create the next page, you can
open "template.htm" and do another "save as" and name it whatever you
want.
