Eighteen days later we were walking the streets of Kingston, Jamaica. It was very hot there compared to Greenland and we noticed that insects and bugs, and flies were everywhere but it sure beat Thule. Everything was so green and it was sure good to be able to buy a nice  cool bottle of beer. We were in Kingston for a week and then we sailed over to Montego Bay which is on the northern side of Jamaica.

I only took two pictures all the time we were in Jamaica so all I can assume is that we were busy doing other things.

There was no large docking facility for the LSD when we got to Montego Bay so we had to anchor out and go ashore on LCM's. Our whole crew with the exception of the Chief went to a real fancy hotel for dinner. They set up a banquet style table for us and we were there several hours having a multi-course meal as well as multi-course drinks. Everything went well until the bill came and there was some dispute as to what they had told us it would be and the actual bill itself. Before long, an argument ensued, more like a free for all and the shore patrol was called. We were all put under arrest and taken back to the ship.

The captain of the LSD was furious as he was informed that his ship must leave Montego Bay at once. Our visit to Jamaica was over and we soon found ourselves sailing for Norfolk, Virginia.........our home base. When we arrived at the harbor at Norfolk, the LSD anchored and the three LCU's dis-embarked and set sail for Little Creek which was the home base for the smaller landing craft such as ours. We never heard another word about the rukus in Montego Bay.

When we got to Little Creek, two new Chiefs were assigned to our ship. Boatswains Mate Chief Young shown above, we found out very quickly was an alcoholic and Chief Engineman Black who we also found out very quickly was a workaholic.

We found out in September of 51 that we were going to the Mediterranean and that we would be there for six months.
